Cardiff Student Accommodation Costs and Monthly Budget
Build a Cardiff student accommodation budget with dated Talybont North totals, calculated weekly rates, included bills and illustrative living costs.
The Talybont North examples are labelled 2026–27.
Weekly figures in this guide are calculated from published 40-week totals.
A monthly comparison does not replace the instalment schedule.
Utilities and internet are included in the cited example; laundry is separate.
Use your actual campus and course dates to budget for travel and extra weeks.
One useful Cardiff budget starting point is a dated residence total, not a general claim about what students “usually pay”. For 2026–27, Cardiff University lists a small en-suite room at Talybont North at £5,745.60 for a 40-week undergraduate period. Dividing that total by 40 gives £143.64 a week.
The example was checked on 3 October 2026. It is a university residence rate, not a Cardiff-wide average or a guarantee of availability. Confirm the room category, your eligibility and the precise booking dates before using it as your own accommodation budget.
Compare the room categories over the same period
Talybont North undergraduate room |
Published 40 week total |
Weekly equivalent calculated from total |
|---|---|---|
Small en suite |
£5,745.60 |
£143.64 |
Medium en suite |
£6,221.60 |
£155.54 |
En suite |
£6,694.80 |
£167.37 |
Moving from the small to the medium example adds £476 across the published period. Ask what differs in the offered room before deciding whether that is worthwhile. Category names alone do not tell you its position, outlook or fit with your belongings.
Cardiff says the residence fee includes utilities and university internet without an additional charge; laundry is pay as you go. These inclusions belong to this university example. They do not automatically apply to a private house or another provider’s listing.
Use a monthly equivalent for planning
Multiply the weekly equivalent by 52 and divide by 12. For £143.64 a week, that gives £622.44 a calendar month. Multiplying by four would give £574.56 and understate a calendar-month comparison.
The £622.44 figure does not replace the £5,745.60 contract total or tell you when instalments are due. Keep all three pieces of information: weekly equivalent, total commitment and payment schedule.
This worked monthly plan uses the small-room rent. The remaining figures are illustrative allowances for one person, not a survey of Cardiff student spending.

Tuition, travel to Cardiff, visa costs, deposits and initial purchases sit outside this example. Add accommodation for any weeks beyond your booking, plus any bills excluded from your actual offer. Replace the allowances rather than treating £991.44 as a target everyone should be able to meet.
Make the travel allowance campus specific
Cathays Park, Heath Park, Cardiff Met’s Llandaff campus and Cyncoed are different destinations. Start with your own teaching address rather than a general city-centre pin. If placements form part of your course, ask what is already known about their locations and keep unconfirmed travel costs visible in your plan.
A cheaper room is not necessarily cheaper after travel. For illustration, saving £10 a week over 40 weeks saves £400. Adding £45 of transport spending in each of nine months costs £405. Your fares may differ, but that is the comparison to make with real offers.
Do not assume that a residence’s standard 40-week price applies to a healthcare course with different dates. Ask the accommodation team for the period appropriate to your course before calculating the total.
Prepare for payments before term begins
The small-room example is also shown as three instalments of £1,915.20. That does not mean you can pay £622.44 every month. Check the actual due dates against when your confirmed funding arrives.
If a payment is needed before you receive funds, discuss the timing with the provider before booking. Avoid solving the mismatch by simply removing a month of living costs from your budget. Our rent payment guide explains how to lay out the dates.

No. The small-room example is shown with three instalments of £1,915.20. Check the provider’s actual due dates rather than assuming the monthly comparison is an invoice.
Not necessarily. Ask for the period appropriate to your own course, especially where healthcare or placement dates differ.
