What to Bring to Student Accommodation
Use a practical student accommodation packing list, checking supplied items, bed size, shared kitchens, air fryers, mini fridges and provider rules.
Check the inventory, bed size and building rules before shopping.
Keep first-night essentials easy to reach.
Coordinate shared kitchen items rather than buying duplicates.
Air-fryer and mini-fridge rules vary by property.
Arrange any medical storage requirement through the provider’s official private channel.
Pack for the room you have booked, not for an imagined empty flat. Check the inventory, bed size and appliance policy first. Then bring enough to sleep, wash, study and cook for the first few days, leaving bulky extras until you know what the room and shared kitchen actually need.
That approach is especially useful if you are travelling with limited luggage. A kettle already supplied in the kitchen is wasted bag space. An appliance the residence prohibits is more than an inconvenience: you may not be allowed to keep or use it there.

This is a practical starting list, not a universal inventory. Your own accommodation confirmation and residence handbook take priority.
Bedroom and bathroom essentials
Confirm the bed size before buying sheets. “Double” and “small double” are not interchangeable descriptions when you need a fitted sheet. Ask whether bedding, pillows or towels are included in any package you have already bought.
Keep one night’s essentials easy to reach: toiletries, a towel, sleepwear, phone charger and any personal medicines or supplies you need. Store medicines according to the instructions from your pharmacist or clinician; if they require refrigeration, arrange suitable storage with the accommodation team before arrival rather than improvising.
Bring only the clothes and storage items you expect to use initially. Check rules for hanging decorations before adding hooks or adhesives to painted walls. A furnished room may still need small practical items such as hangers, but it does not follow that you can bring additional furniture.
A shared kitchen needs coordination
Ask what is already provided and what you are expected to supply. A sensible small set might be a plate, bowl, mug, cutlery, a pan suitable for the hob, a cooking utensil and a food container. Adjust that to how you actually cook and to the residence’s rules.
If you can contact flatmates through an approved channel, agree who is bringing shared items before everyone buys the same thing. Do not assume food, utensils or appliances belong to the whole flat just because they are stored in a communal kitchen. Label personal items and agree a cleaning arrangement once you meet.
The University of Glasgow’s Cairncross information, for example, lists major kitchen equipment while asking students to provide crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. That is a useful illustration of the difference between an equipped kitchen and a complete personal kitchen kit, not an inventory for your property.
Air fryers are not universally allowed
Read the current rule for your building and proposed location. The University of Bristol’s packing guidance lists air fryers as prohibited. By contrast, Cardiff University’s Talybont North page lists an air fryer among the shared-kitchen extras supplied for its specific Ensuite Extra accommodation. Both sources were checked on 3 October 2026.
Those examples do not conflict: they apply to different accommodation. Nor does a supplied Cardiff appliance mean residents elsewhere may bring their own. Ask about the exact model and intended room if the policy is unclear. Do not assume something allowed in a kitchen can be used in a bedroom.
Mini fridges need their own check
Bristol’s current packing page also lists mini-fridges and freezers as prohibited. Do not turn that into a UK-wide ban, and do not assume all other providers permit them.
If you need refrigerated storage for a medical or accessibility-related reason, contact the provider’s documented support route early. Ask what arrangement it can approve or supply and what information it needs. Keep personal medical details out of flatmate chats and public booking enquiries; use the official private channel the team provides.
Follow the electrical and fire safety rules
Check the provider’s instructions before bringing extensions, cooking equipment, heaters or decorative lighting. Bristol distinguishes kitchen-only items from items allowed in bedrooms and says permitted electrical items must be safe. That distinction is why a generic packing list cannot provide permission for your building.
Do not use damaged cables, overload sockets or hide prohibited equipment during inspections. If you are unsure whether an item is compatible or allowed, ask the accommodation team or a suitably qualified professional. A cheap adaptor is not evidence that an appliance is suitable for the electrical supply.
Keep documents and arrival arrangements in a separate list
Have the booking confirmation and any identification the provider requests available through a secure method. Our application documents guide covers booking paperwork; it does not need to fill your shopping list.
Before buying the final items, ask where deliveries can be accepted and from what date. A bedding delivery that arrives before the building will receive parcels may not be there when you need it. If you are still choosing a room, use Studentlife’s UK accommodation search and request its inventory alongside the price and dates.

Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily. Confirm the inventory, bed dimensions and any package you have purchased before buying sheets, pillows or towels.
There is no universal permission. Bristol lists them as prohibited, while Cardiff supplies one in a specified Talybont North room category. Follow the rules for your own building.
Check the property policy first. If you need refrigerated storage for a medical or accessibility reason, use the provider’s documented support route to arrange an approved solution.
Start with the items you need to eat and cook, after checking the hob and supplied inventory. Coordinate optional shared equipment with flatmates through an approved channel.
Bulky storage, duplicate pans, extra furniture and decorative items can usually wait until you know the available space and rules. Keep enough essentials for your first few days.
