Where to Live as a Student in Cardiff

Find Cardiff student areas around Cathays Park, Heath Park, Llandaff or Cyncoed, with route checks for teaching, placements and everyday needs.

Key takeaways
  • Separate Cathays Park, Heath Park, Llandaff and Cyncoed.

  • Cathays and Roath are useful starting areas for Cathays Park study.

  • Healthcare teaching and placements may need separate route checks.

  • A residence walking estimate does not describe an entire neighbourhood.

  • Compare each housemate’s journey before choosing a shared home.

Cardiff’s student accommodation search becomes easier once you separate four destinations: Cardiff University’s Cathays Park and Heath Park campuses, and Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Llandaff and Cyncoed campuses. A room convenient for one is not automatically convenient for another.

Cathays and Roath are useful starting areas for a Cathays Park search. For Heath Park, compare the journey to your actual healthcare teaching location. If you attend Cardiff Met, use Llandaff or Cyncoed as the destination from the start. “Close to university” is too vague to settle the choice.

The university location information below was checked on 3 October 2026. It helps you build a shortlist; it does not establish current room availability, rents or a neighbourhood safety ranking.

Choose the right Cardiff starting point

Teaching destination

Initial shortlist

Important check

Cardiff University Cathays Park

Cathays and Roath, plus suitable university residences

Walk to your department rather than only the Main Building

Cardiff University Heath Park

Addresses near Heath Park and residences with a workable connection

Early teaching or placement start times

Cardiff Met Llandaff

Llandaff routes and Plas Gwyn accommodation options

The journey to the Western Avenue campus

Cardiff Met Cyncoed

Cyncoed campus accommodation and connected addresses

The route to Cyncoed, not to Cathays Park

Keep the destination in the title of your property list. “Cardiff rooms for Cyncoed” is harder to confuse with a friend’s Cathays shortlist than a shared list simply called “student houses”.

Cathays and Roath for a Cathays Park routine

Cardiff University places its student houses in Cathays and Roath, close to Cathays Park. These areas therefore make a sensible starting point if most of your teaching is there.

Within either area, compare the individual street and house. Ask which room is being offered, where it faces and how many people share each bathroom. During a viewing, check the kitchen at the time it is likely to be used and ask how maintenance is reported. A convenient postcode does not make an overcrowded or poorly maintained house a good choice.

Do a small daily-life test as well: mark your teaching building, a food shop and the activity you expect to do most often. You may prefer a room slightly farther from class if it removes a second journey every evening. That is a personal trade-off, not a reason to label one whole neighbourhood “best”.

Heath Park is a separate location decision

If your course uses Heath Park, investigate that route explicitly. Cardiff’s residence guidance identifies Clodien House as its closest residence to Heath Park; eligibility and current availability still need confirmation.

Do not stretch a residence’s published walking estimate into a claim about an entire area. For example, Talybont North gives separate indicative walking times to the Main Building and Heath Park. Those estimates start at that residence, not at every house advertised in a nearby neighbourhood.

Healthcare placements may introduce destinations beyond the campus. Before signing a long contract, ask your course team what is known about placement travel and what remains unconfirmed. Then leave room in the budget for the journeys you cannot yet pin down.

Llandaff and Cyncoed for Cardiff Met students

Cardiff Met’s Llandaff campus is on Western Avenue, while Cyncoed is a separate campus to the north-east of the city. The university lists accommodation at Cyncoed and at Plas Gwyn near Llandaff. Check which accommodation you are eligible to apply for before treating it as a booking option.

The university’s travel guidance describes connections between the campuses and through student areas. Use the current timetable for your intended travel date. A campus shuttle can be useful without being a complete answer for an evening shift, holiday period or weekend journey.

If friends want to share a house but study at different campuses, compare both commutes openly. An assumed extra 15 minutes each way on four teaching days adds two hours a week for one housemate. It may still be an acceptable compromise, but everyone should know what they are agreeing to.

Bring the location and contract decisions together

Once you have two or three workable addresses, compare the total rent over the required dates, included bills, transport spending and move-in payment. Our halls and private housing comparison can help you compare the type of accommodation separately from its location.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

It can be a useful area to investigate, but it is not a substitute for checking your campus. Llandaff, Cyncoed and Heath Park require their own journey tests.

Ask which campus and building the estimate uses. Check the route from the exact entrance, including any access requirements you have.

Start with Studentlife’s UK accommodation search, keeping your campus and dates beside the shortlist. Confirm eligibility, the route and the current total price with each provider before paying.

Start with your course at Llandaff or Cyncoed. Check eligible accommodation and the route to that campus rather than borrowing a Cathays Park shortlist.

Check the current timetable and the times you need. A campus connection may not cover an evening shift, weekend or holiday journey.
