Bristol Student Accommodation Costs and Monthly Budget

Compare Bristol student accommodation costs with dated Manor Hall and St Thomas Street examples, contract totals, bills and a worked monthly budget.

Key takeaways
  • Compare room type and contract length together.

  • The named Bristol rates are 2026–27 university examples, not city-wide averages.

  • A monthly equivalent is not the total for a shorter contract.

  • Budget for the campus and travel pattern you actually use.

  • Keep moving costs, deposits and payment dates separate from routine spending.

Bristol accommodation prices are easier to judge when you compare the room type and contract length together. A low weekly rate in a shared-bathroom room is not directly comparable with an en-suite room booked for a longer period.

For 2026–27, the University of Bristol lists a basic single room with a sink in Manor Hall’s main building at £148.26 a week for 38 weeks. It lists an undergraduate en-suite room at St Thomas Street at £255.50 a week for 42 weeks. These are dated residence examples, checked on 3 October 2026, not a city-wide rent range or current availability guarantee.

Start with the total accommodation commitment

University residence example

Weekly rate

Published total

Manor Hall main building single with sink basic

£148.26

£5,633.88

£149.45

38 weeks

£5,679.10

St Thomas Street undergraduate en suite

£255.50

42 weeks

£10,731

The St Thomas Street example provides a different bathroom arrangement and covers four additional weeks. The difference in total price therefore cannot be treated as the price of an en suite alone. Check your eligibility and the exact room category before comparing an offer with these figures.

The gap between the two Manor examples is much smaller: £1.19 a week, or £45.22 over 38 weeks. Ask what distinguishes the offered rooms instead of assuming that the category label tells you everything about size or position.

Convert the rent into a monthly planning figure

A weekly rent multiplied by 52 and divided by 12 gives a calendar-month equivalent. The £148.26 Manor example becomes £642.46; the £255.50 St Thomas Street example becomes £1,107.17 after rounding.

Do not multiply either figure by twelve and call it the price of a shorter contract. Keep the published contract total alongside the monthly equivalent, then check when the provider actually collects payments.

The following worked budget uses the Manor basic-room rent. Every non-rent amount is an illustrative allowance for one student, not a measured Bristol average.

Replace the allowances with your own needs and add any excluded household bills. Tuition, travel to Bristol, visa costs, deposits and initial purchases are outside the example. Manor lists laundry as an extra cost, so it should not disappear from your plan simply because you are booking university accommodation.

Budget for the campus you actually use

Bristol’s university locations are not interchangeable. Find your teaching building before setting a transport allowance or choosing a residence. A course at Temple Quarter may produce a different shortlist from one based around Clifton; UWE students need their own campus-specific search.

Use actual offers to test whether a location saves money. An illustrative £15 weekly saving across 40 weeks amounts to £600. If your alternative address adds £60 of travel spending over nine months, £540 is already committed to that extra journey. The remaining £60 may not justify the time for you, even though the rent is lower.

Also check the first and last nights covered by the booking. If you need to remain after a 38-week agreement ends, request a separate quote for the gap before deciding that the shorter contract fits your year.

Separate moving costs from routine spending

Your first month may include bedding, kitchen items and travel as well as the accommodation payment. Check the inventory before buying anything bulky. Make one list for purchases you only need once and another for bills that recur.

Record any deposit or advance rent by its payment date and purpose. If an advance is credited against the total rent, count it as part of rent rather than an additional annual cost. It still needs to be available on time. See our instalments and due dates guide for a practical payment plan.

That has not been established. They are named university examples with published 2026–27 rates. A lower price elsewhere needs checking for eligibility, dates, bills and the actual room.

Use the same fields: room category, total contract price, included bills, travel and upfront payment. Our bills included guide helps with the inclusion check.

No. The St Thomas Street and Manor examples have different room arrangements and contract lengths. The total difference cannot be attributed to the bathroom alone.

Ask for a separate price and permission covering the gap before treating the shorter contract as a complete housing solution.
