Where to Live as a Student in Bristol

Choose Bristol student areas by campus, separating Clifton, Temple Quarter, UWE Frenchay and Glenside from other teaching locations.

Key takeaways
  • Use your course building rather than a generic Bristol university pin.

  • Clifton and Temple Quarter require different location comparisons.

  • UWE Frenchay, Glenside and City Campus sites are not interchangeable.

  • Check gradients, entrances and the evening route where relevant.

  • Compare rent savings after the extra transport cost.

A room described as “near the university” can be a poor match in Bristol. The University of Bristol has teaching locations beyond its Clifton campus, while UWE Bristol uses Frenchay, Glenside and City Campus sites. Before comparing neighbourhoods, find the building where your course will actually take place.

For a Clifton-based course, Cotham, Redland, Kingsdown and Clifton are sensible areas to investigate. A course at Temple Quarter calls for a separate search around that destination. UWE students should begin with their named campus, not borrow a shortlist meant for University of Bristol students.

This is a starting map for your search, not a ranking of Bristol’s safest or cheapest streets. Locations were checked against university information on 3 October 2026; door-to-door journeys still need checking from each property.

Match the search to your teaching location

Where you will study

Where to begin comparing

What could change the decision

University of Bristol Clifton campus

Clifton, Cotham, Redland and Kingsdown

The exact building, gradients and evening route

University of Bristol Temple Quarter

Redcliffe and accommodation marketed for Temple Quarter

Whether classes also take place elsewhere

UWE Frenchay

Frenchay campus accommodation and addresses with a workable route to it

The full journey rather than proximity to central Bristol

UWE Glenside

Glenside and properties with a tested campus connection

Placement locations and early starts

UWE City Campus or Bristol Langford

Start with the specific site

These are not interchangeable city-centre destinations

UWE lists Bower Ashton, Spike Island, Arnolfini and Watershed within its City Campus. Bristol’s Langford campus is outside the city. Neither “City Campus” nor “University of Bristol” is a precise enough destination for a property search on its own.

Cotham Redland and Kingsdown for Clifton based study

The University of Bristol describes Cotham and Kingsdown as surrounding its Clifton campus and identifies Redland as a nearby residential area popular with students. That makes these useful places to start, especially if you want to compare shared houses as well as larger residences.

Look beyond the area name. Two rooms in the same neighbourhood can offer quite different daily routines: one might put your department and food shop on the same route, while another adds an awkward uphill walk between them. The university specifically notes the steepness of St Michael’s Hill in Kingsdown.

If steps or hills affect your access, ask for the actual entrance route, not just the walking distance. A video viewing should show the approach to the property, stairs, lift access and the room itself. “Ground floor” does not tell you whether there are steps from the pavement.

Redcliffe and Temple Quarter need their own comparison

Bristol identifies Print Hall, St Thomas Street, Timber Yard and Avon Point among the residences nearest its Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus. These are location leads, not a statement that rooms are currently available or suitable for every student.

St Thomas Street is a useful example of why the campus distinction matters. Its residence page gives different journeys to Temple Quarter and Clifton. Do the same with every shortlisted address: save the route to your main teaching building and, if needed, a second route to the library, laboratory or studio you will use regularly.

A room that works well for Temple Quarter should not automatically be rejected because it is less convenient for Clifton. Equally, do not choose it for a Clifton timetable simply because the listing says it is university accommodation.

Test a normal weekday before choosing

Choose a realistic arrival time for your first class. Include the walk to a stop, waiting, any change and the final walk into the building. Repeat the exercise for a late finish. Do not assume a service that suits a morning lecture also covers a weekend job.

For an illustrative comparison, suppose one room saves £12 a week over 40 weeks: £480 in rent. If it adds £55 of travel spending in each of nine months, the extra £495 would exceed that saving. Your own fares and dates may be different; the calculation tells you what to compare.

At the viewing, check where you could store a bicycle, how deliveries reach the building and whether your bedroom faces a busy entrance. These property details are more useful than a blanket promise that an entire neighbourhood is quiet.

FAQs

Walking distance is valuable, but it does not resolve the room’s condition, contract length or total cost. Use our bills included comparison guide alongside the location check.
