Glasgow Student Accommodation Costs and Monthly Budget
Compare Glasgow student rent by room and contract length, using 2026–27 university examples and a transparent worked monthly living-cost plan.
Read weekly rent together with the number of booked weeks.
The named rates are 2026–27 University of Glasgow examples.
A total-price difference can reflect extra weeks as well as room type.
Keep the monthly equivalent separate from contract totals and instalments.
Add moving costs, excluded bills and any stay beyond the booking.
For Glasgow accommodation, compare the total price for the dates you need before deciding whether a weekly rent is manageable. A 51-week booking may be useful for a longer stay, but it is a different commitment from a 39-week undergraduate contract.
For 2026–27, the University of Glasgow lists a standard single room at Cairncross House at £168 a week for 39 weeks, totalling £6,552. Its Havannah House classic en-suite example is £183.05 a week for 51 weeks, totalling £9,335.55. These rates were checked on 3 October 2026 and are named university examples, not Glasgow-wide averages or room availability promises.

Cairncross House standard single |

The Havannah example costs £2,783.55 more in total than the Cairncross example, but it includes twelve additional weeks and a different room arrangement. Treating the difference as an en-suite premium would miss the contract-length difference.
The university’s fee page says the listed accommodation charges include heating, utilities, Wi-Fi and group contents cover. Check the cover’s conditions and the details of your own offer; do not assume the same package applies to a private rental elsewhere.
Make a monthly comparison
At £168 a week, the calendar-month equivalent is £728: weekly rent multiplied by 52, then divided by 12. Multiplying by four would give £672, which is not a full calendar-month comparison.
Keep the £6,552 contract total separately. You are not turning the 39-week booking into a full-year contract by using a monthly equivalent, and the provider’s payment schedule may not be monthly.
Here is a worked plan using that Cairncross rent. All non-rent amounts are illustrative allowances, not measured Glasgow averages.

The plan excludes tuition, travel to Glasgow, visa costs, deposits and initial purchases. Add any excluded bills and accommodation outside the booked period. For a private room, replace the included-bills assumption with the actual offer rather than simply copying this total.
Check which Glasgow campus you need
These examples come from the University of Glasgow. They are not a recommendation that students at every Glasgow institution should choose those residences. Eligibility and the journey to your own teaching location both need checking.
Put the precise building into a route planner and include the journey home after your latest likely finish. If you will walk or cycle, check how that route works for your access needs and where you can store a bicycle. If you will use public transport, budget for your actual pattern rather than assuming you need the most extensive pass.
An illustrative £12-a-week rent saving over 39 weeks is £468. An extra £50 of travel spending in each of nine months would use £450 of it. That leaves only £18 before considering the time difference. Real quotes and routes should decide the comparison.
Allow for moving in and staying longer
The university’s Cairncross inventory distinguishes supplied furniture and kitchen equipment from the bedding, towels and personal kitchen items students bring. Read your own inventory before shopping, especially for bulky items that may already be supplied or may not be permitted.
Check the last night of the agreement against the end of your course, placement or summer plans. If you need extra time, get a price and permission in writing. Do not count on keeping the same room simply because you already live there.
For payment timing, put the provider’s due dates next to confirmed funding dates. Our instalments and due dates guide helps you distinguish an affordable annual total from a manageable payment schedule.
