For Sheffield, a useful shortlist starts with the University of Sheffield, Hallam’s City Campus or Hallam’s Collegiate Campus. Broomhill, Crookes and Crookesmoor are established areas to consider for shared housing, while the city centre and Ecclesall Road area suit different campus searches. Your teaching address should decide which comparison comes first.
Do not book on the strength of “close to university”. Ask which university, which building and which entrance. Sheffield Hallam’s City Campus is by the railway station; its Collegiate Campus is around Ecclesall Road. The University of Sheffield has its own campus locations. Those are different daily journeys.

Broomhill versus Crookes and Crookesmoor
The University of Sheffield identifies these as areas where students rent houses, with local shops and bus connections. That gives you several streets to investigate without implying that all the homes have the same layout or condition.
On a viewing, imagine the kitchen at the time everyone wants dinner. Is there enough usable worktop and fridge space for the number of residents? Does each bedroom have a realistic study area? A house can look generous in wide-angle photographs while still making ordinary routines awkward.
Check the return walk as carefully as the outward one, including gradients and access requirements. If you have only tested a downhill journey to teaching, you have not tested the whole day. Do the route with the bag you would normally carry if that is practical, and consider the alternative for bad weather.
Hallam students should separate City from Collegiate
Hallam’s directions place City Campus opposite Sheffield station and beside the bus station. The university describes Collegiate as about a 20-minute walk from the city centre. That published estimate is a broad orientation point, not a door-to-classroom time from every central property.
For City Campus, compare central rooms against the specific building you will use. For Collegiate, include the Ecclesall Road area but check where along it the home sits. If teaching is split, make a simple weekly count: how many journeys will you make to each site? A room halfway between two destinations is not necessarily the best choice if nearly all your classes use one of them.
Decide whether to share a house or book a room in halls
The location and the accommodation type are separate decisions. A shared house may give your group a living space of its own, but you need to understand the bill arrangements and who handles repairs. A managed residence can make some services more straightforward, but the contract and inclusions still need reading.
Ask whether the photographs show the exact room and whether a room allocation can change. Check the contract dates against your course rather than assuming every student booking ends after exams. For the broader comparison, see our guide to halls and private student housing.
Put time and cost on the same shortlist
Use one current quote per property. Record total rent, included bills and expected travel costs. The Sheffield student budget guide covers the spending side; here, concentrate on whether the location fits.
For example, if a room would add 20 minutes each way on five campus days, that is three hours and 20 minutes a week. This is a hypothetical way to calculate the time difference, not a claim about any Sheffield neighbourhood. Some students will accept that for the right room; others will prefer to protect that time.
What to look at after dark
If possible, revisit the surrounding streets at a time you would normally return. Look at lighting, the final walk from the stop and the property entrance. Ask how access and maintenance problems are reported. Avoid accepting an unsupported “safest area” claim as a substitute for these checks.
