Where to Live as a Student in Nottingham

Choose Nottingham student areas around your campus, comparing Lenton, Beeston, Dunkirk and central options with a separate Clifton commute check.

Key takeaways
  • Distinguish NTU City and Clifton from University Park and Jubilee.

  • Lenton, Beeston and Dunkirk are starting areas for a shared-housing search.

  • Check the campus entrance and building, not only the campus boundary.

  • Clifton travel needs a separate term-time and out-of-term check.

  • Compare each room’s contract, facilities and journey using the same criteria.

Choose your Nottingham campus before you choose your neighbourhood. A home that works for Nottingham Trent’s City Campus may be awkward for Clifton, while a University of Nottingham student needs to distinguish University Park from Jubilee and any other teaching location.

Lenton, Beeston and Dunkirk belong on a shared-housing search list: Unipol identifies them among the Nottingham areas where it provides undergraduate housing. Central addresses and on-campus accommodation provide different options. None is a universal best choice; use the destination on your timetable to decide which addresses deserve a closer look.

These are search prompts, not claims that every address in an area is nearby. Unipol’s area list and NTU’s current campus and travel guidance were checked on 3 October 2026.

Lenton is a starting point rather than a complete answer

Lenton regularly appears in Nottingham student-housing searches. Before joining friends in a house, compare each person’s teaching location. One room could be convenient for someone based at one site while creating a longer day for another.

For a house viewing, check the room sizes separately. An equal split in rent is a decision for the group, not proof that the rooms offer equal value. Ask about the working space, storage, heating and the condition of the kitchen and bathroom. Take time to read the agreement with advice from your university or students’ union if you are unsure what you would be committing to.

Compare Beeston and Dunkirk at street level

Put the property address and your teaching building into the same planner. Use the campus entrance you would actually enter, because a route to the edge of a large site is not the whole journey.

If you expect to cycle, investigate storage at both ends and whether you are comfortable with the route. If you expect to use public transport, check that the service and ticket cover your journey. A room listing saying “good transport links” does not answer either question.

There is no need to settle on an area first and force the rest of your routine around it. Compare two homes in different areas using the same teaching-day arrival time, then look at rent and facilities alongside that journey.

Clifton needs a separate commuting decision

NTU describes Clifton Campus as four miles south of the city centre and lists on-campus accommodation. Its current student travel page describes the Uni 4 bus between City and Clifton campuses, with a journey of about 30 minutes. That is a campus-to-campus guide, not a promise for your front door.

The same page gives a term-time service pattern and separate out-of-term advice. Check the current operator timetable for the day and hour you need, particularly for evening classes, placements or holidays. Do not infer a year-round timetable from a term-time example.

Living on campus may simplify a teaching-heavy week. Living centrally may suit other commitments, but the time and fare need to be in your comparison. If your course is at Brackenhurst or another site, start a separate route check rather than applying the Clifton advice.

Check a central room beyond its postcode

For central accommodation, confirm the room type and whether the bathroom or kitchen is shared. Look at the bedroom’s position within the building and ask about the actual room you would receive. A property near social venues may suit one student and disrupt another’s sleep; there is no need to turn that preference into a judgement about the whole neighbourhood.

Compare the full contract cost, not just rent per week. Our Nottingham living-cost guide covers budgeting separately, so this location decision does not need to become a second budget exercise.

A shortlist you can actually use

Save three homes with their full addresses, required move-in dates and total prices. Beside each one, record the journey to your first class and the last practical trip home. Give unresolved issues a clear question, such as whether an advertised bus pass includes the operator you need.

If a home fails a requirement you cannot compromise on, remove it before arranging more viewings. Use Studentlife’s UK accommodation search to compare the remaining options, then confirm eligibility, availability and terms with the provider.

FAQs

Use the campus and building on your own course timetable. NTU City, NTU Clifton, University Park and Jubilee are different destinations.

They are useful shared-housing search areas, not universal recommendations. Check each address against your teaching destination and daily routine.

NTU gives about 30 minutes for the City-to-Clifton Uni 4 journey. That is campus-to-campus guidance, not a guaranteed door-to-classroom time.

No. Check the current operator timetable for the date and time you need, including any separate out-of-term service.

Keep its full address, room type, contract dates, total price and the route to your first class. Record any unresolved question before arranging another viewing.
