Can Couples Live in Student Accommodation

Check whether a student room allows couples, including dual occupancy approval, both residents’ eligibility, combined rent and agreement terms.

Key takeaways
  • A double bed does not establish permission for two residents.

  • Confirm that the specific room and both occupants qualify.

  • Compare the combined rent including any second-person charge.

  • Guest rules do not replace dual-occupancy approval.

  • Check household charges and what happens if either resident’s status changes.

Some student accommodation allows couples, but you need approval for two people to live in the specific room. A double bed, a studio label or permission for overnight guests does not establish that approval. Ask about dual occupancy before booking, not after one person has moved in.

Dual occupancy means two approved residents sharing the same accommodation. Providers can set different requirements for the room, each resident’s student status and the price. The question is therefore not just whether couples are welcome; it is whether this room and these two residents qualify for these dates.

The four checks that matter

Check

Ask the provider

Room suitability

Is this exact room approved for two permanent residents

Eligibility

Must both people be students, and for the full booking period

Cost

Is the quote for the room or for each person, and is there a second-person charge

Agreement

Who must be named, what must each person sign and when is the booking complete

Request an answer you can retain with the booking. An availability message for a building is less useful than confirmation for the room type and dates you intend to reserve.

A provider example with clear limits

iQ’s current FAQ says selected studios offer free dual occupancy for two full-time students. Both residents need full-time student status for the entire booking, and both sign the agreement. That example was checked on 3 October 2026.

It does not mean all iQ rooms qualify or that a non-student partner can move into a student-only studio. It also does not establish another provider’s terms. Use it to understand the questions to ask, not as a general permission slip.

If only one of you studies, ask specifically about a student and non-student couple. Some housing searches may need to include ordinary private rentals or designated partner accommodation rather than student-only rooms. The landlord or accommodation provider must confirm what is available and permitted.

Work out the combined cost before splitting it

Suppose an approved room costs £300 a week in total, with no extra occupancy charge. An equal split would be £150 each. That is a hypothetical example, not an advertised Studentlife rate.

Now suppose another room costs £280 plus a £30 weekly second-person charge. Its combined rent is £310, or £155 each on an equal split. The lower headline room price would not produce the lower shared rent.

Check included services too. Ask whether bills, internet and any included insurance apply to both occupants. Obtain advice on the agreement if you are unsure how payment responsibilities work; the way you privately divide rent does not by itself change what you each owe under the contract.

Look at the space as a home for two

Two people can share a bed while still needing separate places to work. Look at the desk arrangement, storage, kitchen space and the route through the room. If one of you studies late while the other starts work early, check whether the layout gives either person a way to sleep undisturbed.

Ask for a floor plan and a viewing of the actual room where possible. A photograph with a wide-angle lens does not show whether two chairs can be used without blocking the room. Think about ordinary days, including cooking, drying laundry and taking online calls.

Compare the home with two separate rooms as well. Sharing one space is not automatically the best fit simply because you are a couple; price, privacy and course schedules all matter.

Keep visits separate from moving in

Guest rules and resident rules answer different questions. If your partner is staying occasionally, read the guest policy. If they will live there, keep belongings there and use it as their regular home, seek occupancy approval. Do not treat repeated guest stays as a workaround for a room that permits only one resident.

If your circumstances change during the booking, contact the provider before changing who lives there. Ask what happens if one person leaves, stops studying or needs to move out. For contractual disagreements, use your university housing adviser or a qualified adviser for the relevant UK nation.

Check household charges separately

Do not assume that a mixed student and non-student household will receive the same Council Tax treatment as an all-student household. GOV.UK explains that mixed households may receive a bill and may qualify for a discount. Ask the relevant council about your own household and property. Northern Ireland uses domestic rates, so the Council Tax assumption should not be carried into a Belfast budget.

Start with a clear enquiry

When using Studentlife’s UK accommodation search, say that two people intend to live together, give the required dates and explain whether both will remain students. Ask for approved room options and the complete combined price.

Our bills-included guide can help you compare the answers. Keep provider approval, comfort and cost in the same decision rather than treating the cheapest headline rent as the only test.

Search by the place you study

Our accommodation search accepts a city, university or property name.

Why it matters for you

Find a location that serves both residents’ routines before asking about dual occupancy.

2

Compare the facilities you need

Our UK search has filters for room type, bathroom and kitchen arrangements.

Why it matters for you

Review private bathroom and kitchen options, while remembering that these filters do not confirm permission for two people.

3

Use listing details to prepare your enquiry

Our UK listings show starting weekly prices and amenities to help you identify options to investigate.

Why it matters for you

Request the complete combined price and written approval for both named residents.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

No. Ask whether the specific studio is approved for two permanent residents and whether both people meet its eligibility rules.

That depends on the provider. The iQ example in this guide requires both occupants to be full-time students throughout the booking; it is not a rule for every landlord.

Establish whether the quote is per room or per person, add any second-person charge and confirm inclusions for both residents before dividing the total.

Permission for occasional visits does not approve permanent residence. Ask for occupancy approval before your partner moves in.

Do not assume that. Where Council Tax applies, mixed households may receive a bill and may qualify for a discount. Ask the relevant council; Northern Ireland uses domestic rates.
